Overview
Action for Global Health commissioned the consultancy as part of its strategic commitment to strengthen engagement with people and civil society organisations in low- and middle-income countries and broaden representation within its global health network. The organisation wanted to establish an equitable internship programme offering opportunities to LMIC-based candidates and needed evidence and practical recommendations to inform the programme’s design, operation and future sustainability.
My Role
I led the research and programme development consultancy, working with Action for Global Health colleagues. My responsibilities included:
scoping internship models and good practice across global health and international development organisations;
designing and conducting consultations with member and non-member organisations, current and former interns and other stakeholders;
analysing qualitative evidence to identify learning on recruitment, remuneration, supervision, duty of care, learning and development, and programme sustainability;
exploring equity and inclusion considerations affecting access to internship opportunities for LMIC-based candidates;
developing practical recommendations for the design and implementation of an equitable internship programme;
incorporating monitoring, evaluation and learning mechanisms into the proposed programme design; and
producing the final consultation report and programme recommendations to support Action for Global Health in taking the internship model forward.
